Irish artist Guggi was one of the founding members of the avant-garde group The Virgin Prunes, whose performances in the 1980s combined painting with post-punk musical experimentation. After the group disbanded in 1986, Guggi concentrated on painting, which he practised as a self-taught artist.
Starting out painting still lifes, Guggi's work developed into representations of everyday objects and items of crockery.
These representations are soberly organised around vases, bottles and utensils made of iron, clay or glass. It's a bit of the Mediterranean, from ancient Greece to Morandi's Italy, which, motionless as stones, nevertheless seem very much alive before our eyes.
Born in Dublin in 1959, Guggi lives and works in Dublin. His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions and can be found in the following collections: National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Château La Coste, Le Puy Sainte Réparade; The Clarence Hotel, Dublin.
"Often in his paintings we find a combination of the magical and the mundane, as Guggi gives us back forms we think we know well, inviting us to contemplate their use and non-use value in different ways, perhaps rediscovering their mysteries in the process. [...] These forms are always subtly recalibrated and resonate when we realise that they are containers for meanings that lie elsewhere, uncontrollable and ineffable, beyond the immediate physical limits of their geometry and functionality."
