The idea of the imprint is a constituent part of Anne and Patrick Poirier's artistic work, which constantly questions the place of man in the world. The imprint thus appears as a kind of objective three-dimensional "photograph", both a fragment of the universe and an allegory of our fragility. By making three prints of tree leaves, Anne and Patrick Poirier demonstrate that our sensitivity is always based on our perception of nature. These three traces are so many odes to the power of life, but they also reflect the ineluctable finitude of death.

Anne Poirier b. Marseille, France, 1941. Lives and works in Lourmarin, France Patrick Poirier b. Nantes, France, 1942. Lives and works in Lourmarin, France For over 40 years, Anne and Patrick Poirier have visited and excavated archeological sites, collecting and inventoring relics from ancient civilizations. This interest in travel and the discovery of world heritage is deeply rooted in their artistic practice. In the wake of Claude Lévi-Strauss’s teachings, they belong to the first generation of artists who have travelled the world in an attempt to understand the organisation of ancient cities, and more particularly, their disappearance. Eschewing the conventional roles of sculptor or painter, they have assumed the mantles of archaeologist and architect, as the situation may call for it. Their work is not so much formal research, as it is a journey through time and human memory, via an artistic approach to the Humanities; a process they consider to be fundamental in binding both individuals and societies together.
