Created on the occasion of his exhibition at Château La Coste, Small Château extends the artistic explorations presented at the Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium. The work echoes Johnson’s God Paintings, a series in which he repeatedly applies an almond-shaped motif known as the vesica piscis — a geometric form created by the intersection of two circles — across dense, textured surfaces. Rendered in shades of red, this form takes on a meditative and spiritual dimension, evoking the artist’s personal experience of the divine. Through repetition, the motif transforms the painted surface into a space for contemplation, where gesture and material become part of a ritual.
The edition Small Château also relates to Rashid Johnson’s exploration of “semi-utilitarian” objects, which blur the boundaries between domestic objects, sculpture and furniture. This approach extends to the bronze sculptures created for Château La Coste, including the Red Chair and Chaise Lounge series, as well as his Vesica Table "For Gatherings". Through a practice the artist describes as “hijacking the domestic,” Johnson appropriates familiar forms and imbues them with new meanings, incorporating elements that carry traces of memory. Rooted in an animist philosophy, these objects seem to possess a presence of their own, becoming silent witnesses to human relationships, gathering and exchange.
Within this dialogue between painting, sculpture and everyday objects, Small Château translates Johnson’s artistic universe into the realm of textiles. Hand-tufted in pure wool, the rug combines symbolic significance with domestic functionality. It can be placed on the floor, where it defines a space and accompanies everyday life, or hung on the wall like a traditional tapestry. This dual mode of presentation extends the artist’s exploration of how artworks and objects inhabit our living spaces, shape our surroundings and contribute to the construction of collective memory.
Through this limited edition, Rashid Johnson continues to explore the connections between art and everyday life, spirituality and materiality, functional objects and works of art. Small Château embodies this distinctive approach, in which familiar forms become vehicles for contemplation, transmission and shared experience.
