When she first ventured into photography in the 1990s, Trina McKillen applied her work as a set designer to the construction of narratives or scenes, often tinged with childhood anxieties. Embellished with props and miniature dolls, they illustrate her approach to making photographs that convey a sense of helplessness. Although they do not yet echo the front-page stories of the clergy sex abuse crisis that would capture her attention a few years later, these early images offer a perspective on McKillen's ongoing concern for children and their vulnerability.
