The two editions created by Anton Corbijn for Château La Coste during his exhibition Artists & more Artists. These two editions present Lucian Freud and Marlene Dumas, two artists in their studios. For the square photographs, he again relied on a Hasselblad medium format camera. As it had been the case since the very beginning of his carreer as a photographer, Corbijn retained the technical flaws that resulted from this approach, such as blurred focus, and did not retouch any mistakes. For this series, Corbijn not only photographed musicians, but also artists including Gerhard Richter and Damien Hirst as well as prominent figures such as fashion designers, sportspeople, or politicians.

Most of the portraits in the series were taken at close distance. The images of many artists were produced in their studios. These photographs are certainly not spontaneous snapshots, but « the result of a game played in equal part by the photographer and the person portrayed. The images are staged (…) in a relaxed atmosphere, which Corbijn creates masterfully and with the highest degree of flexibility. »

Anton Corbijn is a Dutch photographer, filmmaker and video artist. Born on May 20, 1955 in Strijen, Netherlands, Corbijn began his career as a photographer of music in the early 70’s shooting local bands in his teenage years in the Netherlands before moving to London in 1979 to work for the British music magazine the New Musical Express (NME) as their staff photographer. He then shifted into capturing a wide range of creatives for other publications such as Rolling Stone, SPIN, Vogue and for record sleeves, and was initially a regular contributor to cult magazine The Face. He made a swift move into making music videos as early as 1983 and has directed over 80 videos since with a number of musicians including Nirvana, Johnny Cash, Coldplay, Joy Division, U2 and Depeche Mode - the latter two being amongst his longest standing collaborations with their working relationships going back nearly 40 years. Corbijn moved later into directing feature films, his first movie being Control (2007). He then went on to direct major titles including The American (2010) starring George Clooney and Philip Seymour Hoffman’s last film A Most Wanted Man (2014).

During the 2020 lockdown, Anton used his time to put together a monumental book on Depeche Mode, that saw the light in 2021. The book, published by Taschen, and called DM AC 81-18, was a tremendous success. It was his 22nd published book, with two more books published in the fall of 2022. Lately, Anton finished his first feature documentary Squaring The Circle - The Story of Hipgnosis about the iconic album art design studio Hipgnosis, which will be released in Europe later this year, and is planning his fifth feature film Switzerland in late 2023 starring Helen Mirren.
