The narrative of Gorman's work comes from both the curvilinear, square shapes he imbues with movement, and the space between them, seemingly empty but beautifully intensifying the composition as a whole. His clean colour palette is perfectly balanced and optimistic, evoking excitement as well as calm.

Richard Gorman studied lithography and etching at the Atelier Champfleur in Paris. His work draws much of its power from the compositional tension between increasingly prominent and boldly simplified irregular blocks on colour. Frequent and extended visits to Japan have notably influenced his working methods and materials. Richard Gorman was elected RHA at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 2005, and has won numerous awards including the Palette d’Or at the 1986 Festival International de Peinture. Recently, he has also collaborated with the fashion house Hérmes to produce his designs on their signature silk scarves. Born in Dublin in 1946, Richard Gorman was educated in Ireland but has lived and worked in Milan since the 1980s. He has exhibited widely and regularly since the mid 80s, especially in Dublin, London, Milan and Tokyo.

The narrative in Gorman’s work comes from both the curvilinear and square shapes which he imbues with power and movement, and the space between, seemingly empty yet wonderfully intensifying the work as a whole. His crisp colour palette is perfectly pitched and upbeat, eliciting equal amounts of excitement and calm.
